Indian Institute of Metals

Established in 1945, the Indian Institute for Metallurgists emerged to fulfill a crucial need for a professional body of metallurgists in India. During an era marked by limited technical resources and restricted international communication due to wartime constraints, industries faced significant challenges in acquiring essential metallurgical knowledge. At the time, the Inspectorate of Metals in the ordnance Factory was the sole entity equipped to investigate metal products.

Since its inception, the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) has experienced remarkable growth, currently boasting a membership exceeding 4600 and steadily expanding. Its inaugural organizational meeting convened on February 24th, 1946, paving the way for an official inauguration ceremony on December 29th, 1947, graced by Hon'ble Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, Minister for Industry and Supply, at the Royal Asiatic Society Hall in Calcutta. Sri Jahangir, J. Gandhy was appointed as the first President, while Dr. Dara P. Antia assumed the role of the First Honorary Secretary of the Institute.

Today, the IIM has established chapters in nearly all major towns and cities across India, boasting a substantial membership characterized by the highest professional standards. Evolving into a distinguished institution, it remains committed to advancing and promoting the study, practice, and research in Metallurgical Science and Technology. Mr. Satish Pai

A manufacturing industry visionary, Mr. Satish Pai has played a key role in shaping a new India by bringing innovation and sustainability in manufacturing. As the Managing Director of Hindalco Industries, he introduced pioneering technologies and practices in the organization.

His belief and investments in home-grown technologies in aluminium smelting, enabled people to build solutions which significantly reduced specific energy consumption, and resulted in the creation of a novel 400+KA pot technology. Today, the company is known for deploying innovative solutions for the aluminisation of India.

His focus on circular manufacturing and environmental measures have led to Hindalco’s recognition as the World’s Most Sustainable Aluminium Company in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices four years in a row.

Mr. Pai revitalised Hindalco’s R&D function, steering the development of new product lines such as lightweight aluminium-intensive battery enclosures for the global EV industry, lightweight aluminium bulkers and trailers, and new housing infrastructure solutions.

A highly regarded influencer and spokesperson for the metals sector, he serves as the Chairman, Non-Ferrous Metals at FICCI, and is the former Chair of the International Aluminium Institute. Satish received an Honorary Doctorate from Utkal University in 2024 for his contributions to the metals industry, conferred by the Hon’ble President of India Droupadi Murmu. He also received ‘Business Today-PwC India’s Best CEO’s 2024 - super large companies’ award for charting Hindalco's path to long-term growth in aluminium and copper.

During his tenure as the President of IIM (2023-24), Mr. Pai contributed immensely to various spheres, including special initiatives to enhance the participation of students in IIM activities. He earned his mechanical engineering degree from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras in 1985, and holds a patent in directional drilling. Mr. Pai was conferred the ‘Distinguished Alumni Award’ by IIT Madras in 2017 and the honorary Doctor of Letters (D. Litt) by Ajeenkya DY Patil
University in 2020.

Dr. D. De Sarkar

His distinguished services and significant contributions to the Metallurgical profession and Industry as also to The Indian Institute of Metals.

Dr. De Sarkar graduated in Metallurgical Engineering from Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur (now IIEST, Shibpur), did Ph.D. in Metallurgy from Calcutta University, and obtained Diploma in Management from IGNOU.

Dr. De Sarkar is highly experienced and well recognized technocrat having made pioneering contributions towards development, growth, technological upgradation and diversification of Indian Copper Industry.

During his almost five decades association with copper base industry, and particularly since his taking over as CEO in 2005, he has made phenomenal contribution in product diversification; technology selection and implementation; improvement in quality, yield & process economies; Standardisation, etc. as also market analysis and demand assessment study. During his professional stint with ICDC, Dr. De Sarkar has been architect (along with Prof. P. J. Roychowdhury) of developing unique course material for conducting Short Term Course on “Metallurgy of Copper & Copper Alloys”. Ten such courses have been conducted for copper base industry in Kolkata, Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai. He has also been a visiting lecturer at the Department of Metallurgy, Bengal Engineering College (now IIEST).

Dr. De Sarkar was a Member of the Expert Group formed for Hindustan Copper Ltd. to review the technical aspects and feasibility of hydrometallurgy technology. He was a member of two Indian delegations to the annual meeting of International Copper Study Group in Lisbon, Portugal.

Dr. De Sarkar has been closely associated with various committees formed by Ministry of Mines, Government of India, on 5 Year Plans for copper sector, Recycling of Secondary Copper, etc. Presently he is actively involved in promoting the concept of “Circular Economy” and benefit of “Quality Control Order (QCO)” related to copper based industry.

He is the Chairman of Copper & Copper Alloy Sectional Committee MTD : 8 of Bureau of Indian Standards. He is also the Chairman of the Technical Committee – “GreenPro Copper Tubes Project” initiated by CII. He has authored over 50 technical papers and made presentations in several Indian and international seminars.

Dr. De Sarkar’s association with IIM began in 1976, and has grown and become more intense over the years. Dr. De Sarkar has severed as an Office Bearer of IIM at Head Office for 27 years. He was the Convenor of NMD-ATM 1989, and was actively associated with four more highly successful NMD-ATMs in Kolkata. In the recent times, he was a Council Member during 2022-23 and is the Co-Chairman of the Administrative & Finance Review Committee (AFRC) since 2019. Recently, Dr. De Sarkar was Member of a Sub-Committee formed by ARFC to review and rationalize / simplify the Membership Module. The recommendations / suggestions of this Sub-Committee have since been reviewed and approved by the Council for implementation.

Prof. Bikramjit Basu

Dr. Bikramjit Basu is a Professor at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, since 2011 and earlier served on the faculty of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (2001-2011). After training in the field of Metallurgy and Materials Science, he has been pursuing research at the confluence of Ceramic Science, Biomaterials, Additive Manufacturing, Biological Science, and Medicine, to address many unanswered questions related to renewable energy and regenerative. In the field of healthcare, his research group has effectively applied the principles and tools of these disciplines to develop next-generation implants and bioengineering solutions to address unmet clinical needs for musculoskeletal, dental, and neurosurgical applications; thereby impacting human healthcare. His research group has developed technologies related to the manufacturing of bioceramics, acetabular liners, customized bone flaps for cranioplasty surgeries, dental implants and variants of hydrogels. These technologies are transferred to multinational corporates or start-ups, and many of the products, after regulatory clearances, are currently used for patient care in India. A Chartered Engineer of the UK, he has the unique distinction of being the only ceramic scientist from India to get elected to all the major international societies and academies, including the World Academy of Ceramics (2024), the European Ceramic Society (2023), the American Ceramic Society (2019). As an engineering scientist, he is an elected Fellow of all the National Academies of Engineering, Science and Medicine, including the Indian National Science Academy (2021), Indian Academy of Sciences (2020), American Ceramic Society (2019), National Academy of Medical Sciences (2017), Indian National Academy of Engineering (2015), and National Academy of Sciences, India (2013). Internationally, he is an elected fellow of the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering (2020), International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering (2017) and the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (2015). He is a recipient of India’s most prestigious Science and Technology award, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (2013) from the Prime Minister of India; and globally competent awards, like Humboldt Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt foundation (2022), and International Richard Brook Award from the European Ceramic Society (2022). He received the Young Metallurgist of the year award (), Metallurgist of the year award () and Distinguished educator award (), from the Indian Institute of Metals/ Ministry of Steel, Government of India. He currently serves on many advisory panels of the national institutes, European university and federal funding agencies as well as major multinational corporates. As the President of the Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs India (2021-24) and in his leadership roles on many principal committees of the American Ceramic Society (ACerS), he has brought transformative changes to significantly enhance international visibility of the Engineering Ceramics and biomaterials programs in different countries, while inspiring several hundreds of young researchers across the world. Such activities together with his roles as the lead investigator in several multi-institutional network programs including multicentric clinical studies enabled creating a vibrant translational ecosystem, to bring together key stakeholders (industry professionals and clinicians) on the innovation platform in India.

Dr. Dheepa Srinivisan

Dr. Dheepa Srinivasan has made Outstanding contributions in Metal Science research in enabling technologies such as Additive Manufacturing and Thermal Spray Coatings, via Advanced Charactetization, for Gas turbine component advancements. Dheepa has exemplified Innovation for Growth with a very focused and disciplined approach in identifying over two dozen new technology areas in gas turbine structural material engineering and combustion technologies. She has led and authored over 25 new design practices for gas turbine repair. Dheepa has been a pioneer in Additive Manufacturing, Cold Spray and Thermal Spray Coatings and Component Lifing, for Gas turbine Materials and Manufacturing Technologies, continuously for over 2.5 decades. She is the inventor of several new technologies having over 35 patents, and has developed more than 50 technologies / process applications that are now running in several gas turbines and steam turbines. Dheepa has played a key role in providing technical support to the global sourcing qualifications for GE, Oil and Gas, with focus on India sourcing, in castings, forging and fabrication and was instrumental in developing and qualifying over 25 Indian suppliers in advanced manufacturing, including Additive manufacturing of hot section components, as a first of its kind, from India for the globe. One of her key strengths has been to identify and collaborate with various industries as well as academic institutions in India and overseas to accomplish the technology development. She has been continually very active in teaching and training. She has enabled several student interns (from various academic institutions) and has been imparting an industrial edge to engineering education, by continuously sharing and teaching her practical engineering experience, to the scientific community. She is passionate about encouraging and bringing more Women in STEM and champions this cause in several ways, by mentoring your career women in science and engineering domains and delivering seminars and motivating the women by organizing workshops. Overall Dheepa has made continuous laudable and unique contributions in identifying several new areas of research and in bringing them to a technology readiness level of implementation with her egregious approach to scientific fervor, innovation, and collaboration.

Dr. Sublime Ningshen

Dr. Sublime Ningshen of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) has been conferred as a Fellow of the Indian Institute of Metals (FIIM) for 2024. This prestigious honour highlights his significant contributions to the field of metallurgy, particularly in corrosion science and the development of advanced structural materials and ceramic coatings for high-temperature applications for fast reactors, associated nuclear reprocessing plants, and Indian Advanced Ultrasupercritical (AUSC) plant materials.

Dr Ningshen significant research contributions include the qualification of candidate materials in liquid molten metals (sodium, lead & LBE) for future GEN 4 reactors and molten salt corrosion for pyrochemical reprocessing applications. Dr Ningshen molten lead research activities provide a new understanding of the molten lead corrosion and ceramic composite coated P-91 steel and type 316LN SS in a molten lead environment. Dr Ningshen played a key role in developing pyrolytic graphite (PyG) coatings on HDG components such as U melting crucibles, salt purification vessels, cathode mould release and anodes for de-oxidation with 20-25 µm thick PyG coating for the department's metallic fuel program.

Dr. Ningshen has also made valuable contributions to the development of austenitic/ferritic steel-Zr based uranium metal waste form alloys for fixing solid waste to accommodate the noble fission products and actinides within laves phase of the eutectic matrix generated after electrorefining of metallic spent fuels by optimizing the Zr content required for improving leaching and the corrosion resistance.

Dr Ningshen has demonstrated his professional excellence in executing challenging tasks and providing innovative solutions to various Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) units and other Research and Industrial units concerning material selection, corrosion allowance, corrosion protection, failure analysis and life assessment of components. Dr Ningshen also contributed significantly to fireside corrosion and steam oxidation of Indian AUSC materials of tubes made of Super 304H and Ni-based Super Alloy (Alloy 617) boilers capable of operating with 720 °C, 310 atm steam.

Some of the few notable awards received by Dr. Ningshen in recognition of his significant research contributions in the field of corrosion, advanced materials and protective coatings include; DAE Scientific and Technical Excellence Award – 2018, Excellence in Corrosion Science & Technology Award-2017, NACE, India (AMPP India Chapter), DAE Group Achievement Award 2015, JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship, Hokkaido University, (2011-13), Japan, Mascot National Award-2009 by Electrochemical Society of India, IISc Bangalore, Best Ph.D Award by NACE India 2007 (now AMPP India), Visiting Scientist (1999-2000), IFW Dresden, Germany, etc. Besides, he has received Best Paper Awards in many International/National Conferences.

Currently, Dr Ningshen is serving as editor (Editorial Board Member) of Transactions of Indian Institute of Metals (Springer). In addition to his research activities, Dr. Ningshen is a Professor at Homi Bhabha National Institute, DAE, Guided 5 PhD students and teaches courses on Corrosion Science and Engineering for Trainees and PhD scholars. Dr. Ningshen has published more than 120 research papers in high-impact journals.

Currently, Dr Ningshen is serving as editor (Editorial Board Member) of Transactions of Indian Institute of Metals (Springer). In addition to his research activities, Dr. Ningshen is a Professor at Homi Bhabha National Institute, DAE, Guided 5 PhD students and teaches courses on Corrosion Science and Engineering for Trainees and PhD scholars. Dr. Ningshen has published more than 120 research papers in high-impact journals.

Dr Ningshen's work has advanced the understanding and application of corrosion-resistant materials and protective coatings with practical implications for components used in demanding environments, particularly in the context of nuclear and other critical industries. Dr Ningshen election as a Fellow of IIM is a testament to his impactful work and dedication to the advancement of metallurgical science in India​.
