IIMATM2024

Established in 1945, the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) was founded to meet the growing need for a professional body representing metallurgists in India. At a time when technical resources were limited and international collaboration was constrained by wartime conditions, industries faced immense challenges in accessing critical metallurgical knowledge. Back then, the Inspectorate of Metals in the Ordnance Factory was the only organization equipped to investigate and assess metal products.

The inaugural organizational meeting of IIM was held on 24th February 1946, leading to its official inauguration on 29th December 1947 at the Royal Asiatic Society Hall, Calcutta. The event was graced by Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, the then Minister for Industry and Supply. Sri Jahangir J. Gandhy served as the first President, and Dr. Dara P. Antia was appointed as the first Honorary Secretary of the Institute.

Since its inception, IIM has grown remarkably, with a membership now exceeding 10,000 members and steadily increasing. The Institute has established chapters in almost all major cities and industrial centers across India, upholding the highest professional standards.

Over the decades, IIM has evolved into a distinguished institution globally recognized for its leadership in metallurgy and materials science. It remains steadfast in its mission to advance the study, practice, and research in metallurgical science and technology, while also safeguarding the interests of metallurgists and the metallurgical industry.

IIM’s wide spectrum of activities includes organizing national and international conferences, conducting training programs and research initiatives, publishing technical journals and proceedings, and administering professional examinations. These endeavors are driven by the voluntary commitment and enthusiasm of its office-bearers, council members, and chapter representatives, reflecting a collective dedication to the growth and excellence of the metallurgical community.
