    Indian Institute of Metals

    Established in 1945, the Indian Institute for Metallurgists emerged to fulfill a crucial need for a professional body of metallurgists in India. During an era marked by limited technical resources and restricted international communication due to wartime constraints, industries faced significant challenges in acquiring essential metallurgical knowledge. At the time, the Inspectorate of Metals in the ordnance Factory was the sole entity equipped to investigate metal products.

    Since its inception, the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) has experienced remarkable growth, currently boasting a membership exceeding 4600 and steadily expanding. Its inaugural organizational meeting convened on February 24th, 1946, paving the way for an official inauguration ceremony on December 29th, 1947, graced by Hon'ble Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, Minister for Industry and Supply, at the Royal Asiatic Society Hall in Calcutta. Sri Jahangir, J. Gandhy was appointed as the first President, while Dr. Dara P. Antia assumed the role of the First Honorary Secretary of the Institute.

    Today, the IIM has established chapters in nearly all major towns and cities across India, boasting a substantial membership characterized by the highest professional standards.
